RE: request for zoning variance for 4300 Bradley Road

To the Board of Zoning Appeals:

As I cannot be present at the hearing on November 1, please let this letter stand as my statement regarding the requested zoning variance for 4300 Bradley Road.

In the strongest possible terms, I oppose the granting of the variance. The landfill site has been an eyesore and an ongoing point of contention for nearby residents over the course of more than a decade. At this point, it appears that Mr. Baumann merely wishes to unload his problem onto another entity, one that will worsen, not alleviate, the site’s impact on the area.

On the very face of the issue, a plan to operate a strip mine in the middle of a densely populated residential sector belies all claim to any care or concern for the neighborhood. The noise and the air pollution alone would do immeasurable damage to the local quality of life. In addition, such an operation would inevitably adversely affect the stream in question, part of the Big Creek watershed, as well as the adjacent wetland and other ecosystems. There is simply no way to disguise or mitigate the disruption that would be caused by a strip mining operation imposed upon a residential area. Who would benefit, besides two companies based outside the city? These entities would profit from a distance, while the citizens actually living around the site would suffer the havoc wreaked by the proposed operations at the landfill. It defies logic and common sense that such a variance would even be considered.

Rather, Bradley Road Inc. should be forced to finish correcting the current violations and bring the property into compliance with all regulations. Once that process is completed, then it would be appropriate to entertain proposals for productive use of the site that would not entail damage to ecosystems or quality-of-life losses for the surrounding population.

Sincerely,

Denise A. Donaldson
